Red Bull engine Verstappen written off grid penalty soon

Max Verstappen already warned of an imminent grid penalty after his new powerunit failed shortly after installation for the Canadian Grand Prix. The Dutchman said he was not yet aware of Honda's conclusions, but bad news seems to have come from Japan.

'Verstappen's Honda engine written off'

The new engine that Verstappen was due to drive in the Canadian Grand Prix had to be swapped immediately for an old one after the power unit gave way as early as the second free practice session. After this, the engine went back to Honda's headquarters in Japan, where it was extensively examined.

According to De Telegraaf, it is now clear that the power unit can no longer be used. However, Red Bull have not made any official statements about it for now. Verstappen, meanwhile, is already running his fourth engine from the pool, as he also switched to a new engine ahead of the Spain GP.

This means Verstappen will soon take a grid penalty, probably before the summer break. Given the good overtaking opportunities at Spa-Francorchamps, the Belgian GP may be best for this. If Red Bull Racing chooses to do so, Verstappen will be moved back 10 places in Belgium.
