For Lando Norris, a four-tenth gap between himself and Max Verstappen would not have been what the Brit would have wanted when the chequered flag fell in qualifying at the Austrian Grand Prix. After squandering the chance to take sprint race victory by letting the Dutchman dive up his inside easily and retake the lead, the RB20 was on fire around the Red Bull Ring, and Norris could only settle for second for Sunday's race.

Norris says McLaren were "not good enough" to be close to Verstappen

Speaking in the press conference after qualifying for the main race, Norris knows that his papaya-coloured car will really struggle to find the pace required to close the gap between himself and Verstappen.

"It was pretty good, but not amazing," said the Brit. "A bit trickier today than it was yesterday for wind and conditions and stuff like that, but relatively, we were much further back, closer to the Mercedes and Ferraris than we were relative to Max. There were at least one or two-tenths in just doing a very good lap from my side, but definitely not enough to get Max. So he did a good job and Red Bull made a good step from where they were yesterday and clearly, yes, we're a lot quicker than what we could achieve today."

Norris let the race win slip in Canada and Spain when a perfect opportunity presented itself, but tomorrow may not offer the chance to beat Verstappen. However, the McLaren driver is still positive about the fact he is the only one who brought the challenge to the Dutchman in qualifying.

"It's still P2, still front row, and yes, hopefully, we can turn that into something good tomorrow. We changed a couple little things, but I think we always do a very good job in kind of just getting the car going from the off in a pretty, pretty close to the best way we can, and the most optimised way that we can. I think we already did a good job all weekend. Maybe others were just able to improve more than we could and we optimised things earlier in the weekend, but we think we took a step forward. It's just various things that made things trickier."

And what can Norris expect from tomorrow's race around the Red Bull ring? "Kind of the same, but not. I know what I did wrong. It's obviously very clear, but from the pace advantage, Max had today, that's probably going to carry into something tomorrow as well. It's another day. Things can change and conditions are going to be very warm again. The races have been good to us lately. It's been one of our strengths relative to qualifying. So excited to see what we can do."
