George Russell's plan finally worked. The Brit waited for Lando Norris and Max Verstappen to duel and secured victory at the Red Bull Ring. He was joined on the podium by Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz after Lando Norris and Max Verstappen's incident took them out of race winning contention.

"I think it was a tough fight out there at the beginning of the race. Just to hold on to that P3, I saw on the TV that Max and Lando were going pretty hard. I knew Lando would watch if I got that race win, but he seemed to have done an amazing job because he was in this fight. You've got to be there at the end of a pick of the pieces, and that's what we were," said Russell. The Brit, who secured his second F1 victory, was shocked to see the incident. "I couldn't believe how close we were to Lando and Max, who I think was only about 12, 13 seconds behind. I knew it was a possibility. The team have worked so hard. We've made so many strides since the start of the season. The last three races have been incredible. So, more to come. I think it's no secret that Red Bull with Max and McLaren with Lando are still a little bit out in front, but we're always putting ourselves in that third-place position."

Mercedes 'riding a wave' says Russell

"I think we're riding a bit of a wave at the moment. These last three races have been incredible. I think, realistically, we probably could have won the race in Canada. So this probably makes up for one too many mistakes on my side there." Concluded Russell, who believes this race makes up for losing out in the Canadian Grand Prix.
