Wolff can now offer Verstappen a winning car: Time to call?
- Ludo van Denderen
Time and again, Toto Wolff had said it: yes, he would like to attract Max Verstappen, but the Mercedes boss also realised that the best driver in the world would not choose his team. After all, Verstappen wanted a car that could win, and Mercedes could not offer that. Until Sunday in Austria.
George Russell stood at the end with the main trophy in his hands, ending a two-year drought. Mercedes were finally the best in a Grand Prix again, much to Wolff's delight. Now, the Austrian can even say to Verstappen: 'We do have a winning car,' he concluded.
'Mercedes not yet the destination for Verstappen'
While Wolff sat in his hospitality unit, he answered the question from GPblog: "Are you going to call the Verstappens directly tonight?" After first smiling, Wolff responded, "Well, we need two to crash in the front to win at the moment. I think we still need to look at ourselves and say, what can we do in order to have a car that is able to race with these two in the front."
"And do it more regularly. I think this is a moment where we can say that we can be a harbour, a port of destination for the best drivers, including Max. But we're not there yet. If I was him I wouldn't be considering such a move yet,' Wolff concluded.
