Due to Max Verstappen's and Lando Norris's much-discussed crash, George Russell took his second victory in his Formula 1 career. The win in Spielberg not only earned Russell 25 points, but it also ensured he achieved a remarkable record in Austria.

Throughout the race, Russell raced in third place, well away from Verstappen and Norris who were racing wheel-to-wheel after the Dutchman's poor pit stop. Norris' divebombs and Verstappen's late moves resulted in the Red Bull and McLaren colliding. Both drivers suffered punctures. Verstappen was still able to continue and finished fifth. Norris didn't finish. As Russell crossed the line first, he became the first driver in Austria to win in GP3, F2 and now F1.

Russell enjoyed the Red Bull Ring

"It's a track I enjoy," Russell revealed afterwards. "The last couple of years have been very difficult for us as a team. We didn't have high expectations going into this weekend. But we ended up qualifying P3 [on Saturday]. We've been in that mix. We were fighting for the podium. Realistically, we still probably have the third quickest car behind Red Bull and McLaren. But the last three races, Lewis and I have been in that P3 spot. We're really getting the most out of it. Sometimes, racing goes your way," said the Briton. Looking over the entire 2024 season, Russell has the better results.

Russell looks forward to battle with Verstappen at Silverstone

In recent races, Mercedes seems to be getting closer and closer. After a number of updates to the W15, things have been going much better for the Silver Arrows since the Canadian Grand Prix. Next weekend the British Grand Prix is on the programme, which will be his home race for Russell. "Anything can happen. I think Red Bull were really quick this weekend in the high-speed corners. So they're going to look pretty strong next week in Silverstone. But we've got a few days between now and then. I'll be on the simulator on Tuesday back at the factory. So I'm really excited for that one."
