Hamilton looks to leave Mercedes for Ferrari on a high

Lewis Hamilton won his first race since 2021 after securing his ninth victory at home in Silverstone last weekend. Nevertheless, the British driver will be leaving Mercedes at the end of the season for Ferrari. At Sunday's post-race press conference, Hamilton reflected on what it meant to him to win with the Silver Arrows, whom he has won six world titles with.

Hamilton left McLaren for Mercedes for the 2013 season, after six years with the British team. Now, he is set to make a move again, this time to Ferrari. During his time with Mercedes though, he has won six Driver's Championship titles, and broken a host of other records. Although the British driver has expressed his excitement to move to the Italian team, his final home race with Mercedes has made it possible to leave on a high. "I think when we started the season and we had a car where we weren't gonna get anywhere near Red Bull, for example, anywhere near looking like we would ever get a win through the year," he began.

"That for me felt like it would be kind of bittersweet at the end of the season where you've not had something like today and the fact that we've really all come together, everyone's done such a great job to get the car into a place where we're feeling much more comfortable. It really changes from the foundation from last year so not leaving on the low but leaving on the high, which has been our goal."

Can Mercedes continue to perform this season?

Mercedes have now won two race weekends in a row, after George Russell won the Austrian Grand Prix. This was the team, and Russell's first victory since 2022. Unlike Russell, Hamilton has had to wait since 2021 for his next victory. Despite a challenging start to the season, Hamilton remains optimistic in terms of the team's performance, as they edge closer to third in the Constructors. "There's still a long, long way to go but the car, that by no means is the quickest car on the grid right now, I think we are super close. And I think hopefully with a couple of, with the next upgrade, perhaps we will be in an even stronger position to really, really be fighting at the front row more consistently," he concluded.
