Lewis Hamilton becomes the second Mercedes driver this season to win a race, after his teammate George Russell won the week prior in Austria. Before Russell's win, the team had not won since 2022. Speaking to GPblog and others in the paddock, Toto Wolff offered his perspective on the two race wins.

Only two teams have had both their drivers win a race this season, Ferrari, and now Mercedes. In Austria, Russell was able to secure his win after an incident between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris left the race leaders struggling, with Norris retiring from the race. However, at Silverstone, it was Russell this time who DNFed, and Hamilton was able to convert his P2 start into a win. The seven-time world champion was able to win on his performance, with no incidents affecting his race.

Nevertheless, this does not take away from Russell's victory, the team boss said: "Last weekend, we weren't far off. When you look at the gap that we had before the crash, it was maybe two tenths of that or a bit more. That is the closest we've been for a long time, on a track that we didn't like so much in the past. That kind of gave us hints that it could be getting much better."

How has Mercedes improved since the start of the season?

At the start of 2024, Mercedes did not look convincing. They were fighting to remain in the top 10. Now, they sit fourth in the Constructors, and are closing the gap between them and McLaren. Since introducing their upgrades in Canada, they have been able to fight for pole positions and wins. Despite their improved performance though, Wolff was surprised at how soon it has come: "Honestly, we didn't think it would be Silverstone because there's barely anything, just small stuff that we put on the car. We were more expecting Budapest or Spa. We have justified that what we do is right at the moment."

With Hamilton leaving at the end of the season, the Austrian has made it clear that the team still has the desire to win. "We've got to finish the season on a high. Provide them with a car that enables them to win and for the team to score very good points in the Constructors' Championship," he concluded.
