Sargeant still set to leave Williams but Vowles admits: 'car isn't quick'
- Ludo van Denderen
It looks like Logan Sargeant could be an IndyCar driver next season, where debutant Prema Racing wants to give him a chance. The Williams driver's Formula 1 career is likely to come to an end soon. When exactly, is currently written in the stars: Will he be allowed to stay on with the British team until the end of the season, or will Sargeant be sidelined before the end of 2024?
Williams is having a difficult season, with Sargeant yet to finish in the points and his experienced teammate Alex Albon also only scoring twice. It's been a harder year for Williams than in 2023. The British team scored 28 points across the season last year, and after the halfway point in 2024, Williams has just four points to their name. James Vowles (Williams' team principal) does not seem to be judging Sargeant directly on the results.
Vowles takes responsibility for car development
"What I've said before and I've maintained today is that our car and this is a responsibility on my shoulders and the team, isn't quick enough. It's not a driver issue we suffer from today. We've simply been outdeveloped and we have to make sure that we accelerate that process," Vowles admits.
Either way, Sargeant does not appear to be in the running for a seat in '25 at Williams. Carlos Sainz was the leading candidate for that seat for quite some time, but his continued wavering means Williams now seems to be looking further afield. Valtteri Bottas is a very serious candidate to return to his old team next season, replacing Sargeant.
