McLaren to have the fastest car in F1? 'There's this narrative'
With Red Bull Racing struggling at the moment with their car, and Mercedes just getting in contention, many point to McLaren having the best car on the grid at the moment. Team principal Andrea Stella only partially agrees with this statement.
While Lando Norris has been often asked during recent Grand Prix weekends where did he miss out on a victory, McLaren are making steps in the constructors' championship. Since the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, McLaren have managed to outscore Red Bull Racing everytime, excent for one each weekend, also thanks to Sergio Perez's struggles.
"I mean, there's this narrative around that McLaren is the best car. I think we make good use of the car, right? So I would like to emphasise the good work of the people that prepared the car," team principal Andrea Stella began to explain to GPblog among others.
The Italian however believes that how has the best car at the moment depends on the given conditions. "We come to practice sessions and the car performs well and we build well through the weekend. But we saw [in Silverstone] that, not necessarily we are the fastest car because in the first stint, when things were pretty regular, Mercedes, they were going."
Stella concluded: "So It's part of the positives. I think the team are working very well. And when you race for the front positions, it just becomes much more visible when you still have some work to do."
