Formula 1 fans are often interested in the drivers' lives off the track, with many wondering if they all keep in touch with one another. Speaking to Cosmopolitan UK, Alex Albon has revealed that there are many WhatsApp chats between the drivers, including one for 'private jets'. The Williams driver explained how it works, and also what happened after Lando Norris and Max Verstappen's incident in Austria.

In the interview uploaded to Cosmopolitan UK's YouTube channel, Albon answered a series of questions. Firstly, he was asked what a common misconception was that fans might have. For Albon, it believed it was the luxurious lifestyle the drivers live, which is not always the case. "I was flying back from Austria last week. The amount of fans at the airport were shocked to see us flying commercial with them. It's pretty normal, at least for most of the drivers. I don't struggle with it," he said.

Another important question he was asked is whether there is a Formula One drivers' group chat, to which he revealed there is. "It’s very business orientated. I would say it's 90% business, 10% memes. It's more around safety and general day-to-days," he said. "We'll complain about the toilets being bad at a race track or something like that, which has no relevance, but I guess it's a bit of a global ranting forum."

Is there more than one group chat?

Nevertheless, the Williams driver shared that there are also a number of separate group chats, relating to their hobbies, including one to organise private jets. "I wonder how it works," he said. "Because a lot of our managers are involved in it, and if a driver has a bad race, or a driver crashes into another driver and they're on the same plane, I haven't had that done yet to me, but does that driver then go to another driver's plane and fly with another group of drivers?"

The Thai driver then referred to the incident between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen in Austria, which led the former to retire. When asked what happened after the Austrian Grand Prix, Albon joked the schedule luckily worked well: "Last Sunday, I was on the flight with Lando, Carlos [Sainz] and Daniel [Ricciardo], but Max wasn't on our flight, so they were never supposed to be flying together," he concluded.
