McLaren one-two for the Hungarian Grand Prix as Norris starts on pole
Lando Norris will start on pole for Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix after Saturday's qualifying session. Oscar Piastri will start behind in second, with Max Verstappen in third. Two red flags were also caused by Sergio Perez, and Yuki Tsundoa. This also ended Mercedes consecutive streak of pole position in Hungary.
What happened during Qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix?
Rain fell ahead just before qualifying started on Saturday, which left all 20 drivers entering the track on soft tyres. Shortly after entering the track, drivers noticed the wet conditions increasing. Lewis Hamilton, who has started on pole in Budapest nine times, went fastest with twelve minutes to go, just before Logan Sargeant called a yellow flag in sector 1 after hitting the barrier. After he rejoined the track, the flag was cleared. With less than seven minutes to go though, Sergio Perez caused a red flag after hitting the barrier, leaving him out of the session. This was caused after dipping a wheel on a slippery kerb.
The session resumed shortly after, with drivers making their way back onto the track to avoid elimination in Q1. At the end of the session Daniel Ricciardo set the fastest time ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Perez, George Russell, Zhou Guanyu, Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly were all eliminated. Russell was frustrated with his elimination, which he complained about on the radio as questioned why the car did not have enough fuel in it.
Q2 began shortly after, with Max Verstappen setting the fastest time early on. Oscar Piastri also looked strong, going second on used tyres, ahead of Fernando Alonso. As two minutes remained, Hamilton could be seen struggling for grip on the track, whilst the weather continued to change. Lando Norris finished the session fastest ahead of Max Verstappen whilst Hamilton finished tenth and managed to secure his place in Q3 by just 0.010s from Nico Hulkenberg. This left he Haas driver eliminated alongside Valtteri Bottas, Alex Albon, Logan Sargeant and Kevin Magnussen.
Who starts on pole for Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix?
As Q3 began, drivers were warned more rain was on the way during the final session. Lando Norris took provisional pole from Max Verstappen, with a gap of +0.328 seconds between the two as seven minutes remained, and rain began to fall. However, with just over two minutes to go, Oscar Piastri took second place from Verstappen. However, Yuki Tsundoa then caused a red flag after crashing into the wall at turn 5 as a result of going too wide. The car was significantly damaged and that ended his qualifying session. The sizeable crash brought out the medical car for the Japanese driver too. Although Verstappen was able to complete his lap, he could not match the McLaren's. As race-control announced that the final two minutes of the qualifying session would remain, the world-champion was seen out of his car already, with the team confident in his timing. After the restart, it was Norris who was able to secure pole position for Sunday's Grand Prix.
