Norris to challenge Verstappen in Hungary: 'In the best position'
Lando Norris will start on pole position for Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix. His teammate Oscar Piastri will start in second, making it a McLaren one-two. The pair will have world-champion Max Verstappen behind them, but Norris is ready for the challenge.
After a chaotic qualifying session, which included two red flags caused by Sergio Perez in Q1, and Yuki Tsundoa in Q3, Norris was able to secure the front spot on the grid. This the second time this season the Brit starts from pole, and the third in his career. Speaking after the session, Norris said: "I am very happy. Not an easy qualifying. Ending on top is always the best part of it. Happy for the team. A one-two is even better for the team." Last season, Norris finished second at the Hungaroring behind Verstappen, but this weekend he will be looking to be triumphant and secure his second F1 win.
Can Norris win the Hungarian Grand Prix?
"We already have confidence so it's not like we need more of it or we are searching for it. We are confident and happy that we can do a good job and we have a good car to fight for pole. That's what we did," he said. Norris securing pole position ends Mercedes reign as they have led the Hungarian Grand Prix for the last four years. McLaren have been improving throughout the season, and have been on the podium consecutively since China. They are just seven points behind Ferrari in the Constructors. Carlos Sainz will start fourth, whilst Charles Leclerc is in sixth.
Nevertheless, Norris remains confident in the team, and remains hopeful for the race: "We've been improving every weekend. To end on pole is sweet. We are in the best position for whatever the conditions throw at us. Two cars on the front row so we can control it from there. I am expecting to [go one more]. If I don't, it's not been a good day," the Brit concluded.
