Verstappen gets more criticism after radio messages in Hungary

By all accounts, Max Verstappen experienced his worst weekend of this season at the Hungaroring. Frustrations ran high in the cockpit. After the race, the Dutchman was heavily criticised. Former driver Karun Chandhok also thinks Verstappen needs to be a little less frustrated.

Race to soon forget for Verstappen

It started at the start of the race. There, Verstappen seemed to come out of the corner in second place, but had to cede that spot to Lando Norris much to the Limburger's displeasure. Things then went completely wrong strategically, leaving the three-time world champion behind Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Through overtaking, Verstappen passed Leclerc but for the umpteenth time, Verstappen and Hamilton hit each other, putting the Red Bull driver back on P5. The stewards assessed it as a race incident, which led to even more frustrated team radio comments.

"When you are in the cockpit, you have a very myopic view of what is happening. All you can see is we're only quick enough for third, so do the same as the other two cars in front and we'll be in third. Then all of a sudden, 'They've put me in this position with dirty air, and now I am being forced to overtake to get back to where I was in the first place.' I think that has caused all the frustration," Chandhok reveals in Sky Sports' F1 podcast.

Chandhok criticises Verstappen

According to Chandhok, Verstappen could sing a tone lower towards his team. "I personally don't think think it justifies the level of anger directed towards GP. I do feel for GP. (Gianpiero Lambiase). It's a team sport, and all those engineers work incredibly hard to support you. You need them onside. And if you have a bad day, and I know Max doesn't have many bad days, but they will happen. They don't berate you for that. It's not nice for them to hear," the former Formula 1 driver said.
