What does PU change mean for Alpine's future? Famin responds

On Friday, another major shakeup was announced at Alpine. A year after Otmar Szafnauer was announced to leave the French team following the Belgian Grand Prix, the same faith awaits Bruno Famin. The Frenchman then confirmed that they will stop developing their '26 engine. Talking to the press, Famin answered what this means for the team's future in the sport.

"It's quite theoretical at the end of the story, because now all the PU manufacturers are working very closely, very early in the project with the teams and all the integration are incredibly optimised. If we take a Ferrari or Mercedes engine, I'm quite convinced that all the integration and all the packaging will be already very good," Famin began on what this power unit change will mean for the French team.

The Frenchman, who is serving his last GP as team principal of the team, he added: "The Formula One project remains a key project for the Alpine brands. It's thanks to Formula One that we want to develop brand awareness globally. The project is just reallocating the resources to develop the brand better, always based on the pillar of motorsport, mainly Formula One, to develop the awareness."

'Alpine at crossroads'

Alpine are Renault's sports brand. The French changed their name entering the 2021 season from Renault to the current one. "We are at a very specific crossroads where the project for developing the Alpine brand is not very concrete or very clear. We know the resources needed for developing it," Famin explained.

He continued: "On the other hand, we know that for the 2026 car generation in Formula One, the chassis regulations have been published a few weeks ago, it's not that we have to decide because again the guy designing the chassis needs to know which PU they are going to use. The question from the Alpine brand point of view is how do we use it in the best possible way for developing the brand and the resources we have."
