This top driver has put Formula 1 out of his mind: 'Haven't missed anything'
- Ludo van Denderen
Alex Palou has been linked with a move to Formula 1 for years. It never materialised and so the Spaniard 'just' drives his races in IndyCar. Not without merit, of course, as in 2024, he is fast on his way to his third title in this class. It does not hurt Palou that he has never got his chance before. In fact, he no longer expects it to happen and is at peace with that.
Formula 1 is the most appealing racing class in the world. 'The twenty best drivers in the world' is said about them. Palou, however, thinks this is not so bad. "For example, some people think that Albon has had a better racing career than me," Palou stated in Spanish newspaper Marca. "But I prefer two IndyCar titles to no Formula 1 wins."
'Not as successful in Formula 1 as in IndyCar'
Palou admits he would have been quite happy to compete with the drivers in Formula 1. "Although we all know that I wouldn't have won two championships then," the Spaniard is realistic. "I tried, but it didn't work out. That doesn't bother me otherwise. Tried, didn't succeed and that's it. I haven't missed anything. Nor do I think Formula 1 has missed anything."
Palou's name has been circulating in German media in recent days, when it comes to the yet-to-be-forgotten seat at Audi (Sauber). Listening to the Spaniard's words, it is hard to imagine him wanting to swap his spot in IndyCar at all for a place at the currently worst F1 team on the grid.
