Aston Martin has lost touch with the top teams. At the start of last season, the British formation was 'the best of the rest' behind Red Bull, but a year and a half later, the team of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll is stuck a bit in no man's land. Will Aston Martin straighten its own back or will they need Adrian Newey's help to do so?

Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari are all a size too big for Aston Martin, but at the same time they don't have that much to fear from behind. For now, that is. Aston hopes to move forward with updates and Alonso is confident his team knows which turn to take next.

"I think there are some ideas and evidence of things we did well and things we maybe didn't understand at the first time," Alonso said in front of GPblog. "So yes, I am confident that we have the talent in the team. We have the motivation. We have the new factory now. We also have new people coming. So yes, unfortunately in Formula 1 you cannot change things overnight, but we will not stop working until we have a competitive position."

Newey and Aston Martin

So Aston Martin is busy recruiting new engineers. Does that include Adrian Newey's name? Reports are percolating in the rumour circuit that there is talk of a $100m three-year deal between the two camps.

Alonso is keeping somewhat aloof from it. When asked how much confidence he has in the legendary designer joining, the Spaniard replied, "There are so many rumours. And we have so many things and so many problems to solve and get [more] performance in the car that we cannot get distracted every weekend from where everyone is going. For me, it's just already a privilege that Aston Martin and Adrian Newey are linked."

"That combination, just to read it... it's just a privilege and I feel honoured to be part of Aston Martin. If it happens one day, I'll be happy, but I can't keep dreaming or thinking about things that are not in the present," he concludes.
