Andrea Stella on Lando Norris potential in Formula 1

Stella bluntly disagrees with Norris: 'That's his style'

24 August at 10:25

Andrea Stella has responded to Lando Norris after the Brit said critically that he had not been driving like a world champion. Norris has previously been extremely self-critical of himself, but his team boss revealed in Friday's press conference that he still believes the 24-year-old is world championship material despite his star drivers own doubts.

Stella has worked with several F1 greats throughout his career. At Ferrari, he worked with both Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso as a performance and race engineer, who have won nine world championships between them. Stella's experience working with world champions has shown him something: He believes Lando Norris can reach this level.

"The first thing I make of his comment is that it kind of confirms his style. He's quite self-critical. He tends to look occasionally at the half-empty part of the glass. In reality, I think he definitely has the potential of a world champion. And he's performing at World Championship level," Stella began.

Stella: 'Lando is definitely world championship material'

"I like that we compare ourselves against perfection because this is what we need to do. And, I've been very encouraged that, every little opportunity, has been actually analysed in a great level of detail. Lando is always been very open and transparent like he does with the public, definitely with the team, and we are together in trying to nail and polish all the possible situations in which we need to be better at delivering according to the potential," Stella said.

"Definitely World Championship material, like in everything, Lando, Oscar, the entire team, every single opportunity to improve needs to be attacked with determination to improve." the Italian concluded.

McLaren will be hoping they can take victory at the Dutch GP this weekend. Like the majority of the first half of the season, it's set to be another close race.
