How did Norris react to Verstappen's strong start? 'Surprisingly calm'
- Estéban den Toom
At Zandvoort, Lando Norris qualified his McLaren with a lead of more than three and a half tenths on the first starting spot, ahead of Max Verstappen. Due to a poor start, the Briton only lost the lead immediately to the Dutchman. After the race, Norris was asked if he expected to win the race after that.
His victory at the Dutch Grand Prix is the second win in Lando Norris' F1 career. The Briton won earlier this year in Miami. At Zandvoort, Norris briefly seemed to have thrown away his chances at the start, but in the end the McLaren proved a lot faster and he still won at Zandvoort.
Norris remained calm when Verstappen overtook him
The Briton expressed after the race that he still retained confidence after Verstappen overtook him at the start. "After yesterday we were confident the pace was going to be good for sure, and my long run pace on Friday was very, very good but you don't do anything more than like, 10, 11 laps and you never know in the 72 lap race," he said
"I would also say Max's pace didn't look bad on Friday, you could already pick apart a bit of it and kind of give yourself some confidence but it wasn't like we came into here thinking yeah, we can easily just pass him on track and pull the gap that we did today so it's just not often that I've been in the lead and being able to control things and do what I want to do, and look after the tyres and have clean air and stuff like that. All of this makes a big difference at the end of the day," Norris told me.
In the end, Norris remained incredibly calm and was able to overtake the Dutchman on track. "I didn't expect things to go as well as it did but after getting done into turn one and off the line, I was actually just surprisingly calm. Maybe because I'm a bit used to going backwards at the start, I'm very prepared for those kinds of scenarios and I was very calm and just thought, okay, well what can I do now?"
''I'm just going to look ahead, save tyres and see what my pace was. Even on lap 10, 11, 12, 13, I managed to overtake Max again a bit and started to get a bit optimistic that I could almost pass him on the track. I had two chances. The first one I wasn't close enough. On the next lap it worked and I was able to focus,'' Norris said.
