British media react to Lando Norris lost chance at F1 Italian GP

British media hold no punches on Lando Norris on McLaren after Italian GP

The British media have been blunt with Lando Norris and McLaren, as they see the driver miss out on taking a bigger chunk out of Max Verstappen's lead in the World Championship. Norris cut his gap but it could've been so much more and the British media sense the pain.

The Sun

The British tabloid however pins the blame on Norris himself. "Norris choked again at the start of the Italian Grand Prix to put a major dent in his title hopes. It was the same old story for Norris though who started in pole position but failed to finish the opening lap in first-place for the fourth time this season," The Sun wrote before going on to highlight how impressive Oscar Piastri was.

"Oscar Piastri left his McLaren team-mate for dust by passing the pole-sitter on the opening lap by the second chicane. The Australian driver was relentless throughout."

The Guardian

The Guardian looks at the bigger picture for McLaren: "McLaren were left dejected and in no little disbelief that their one-two on the grid had turned into defeat. The import of their failure weighed far more heavily than elation of Ferrari’s success and, indeed, raised more questions," the newspaper said. "McLaren even chose not to switch their drivers’ places at the death to maximise Norris’s points as the only realistic challenger to Verstappen – a decision that raises questions as to how they are managing his tilt at the title, even as they closed to within eight points of Red Bull in the constructors’ championship."

Independent

The Independent see Norris' poor run in Italy continue: "Norris has never led a lap after starting from pole, and his miserable run continued at the Temple of Speed.  His work unravelled when a scrappy exit from the opening chicane afforded Piastri a tow on the exit of the Curva Grande. Norris was left exposed."

BBC Sport

The BBC sees McLaren "licking their wounds" but give a positive outlook on Norris' situation: "Norris was disappointed with third but can still look back on a race in which he gained more points back on Verstappen, and he still has the same task as before - to score on average just under eight points more per race than the Dutchman to win the title."
