Vasseur evaluates surprise Monza success: “the upgrade is crucial”
Charles Leclerc climbed from starting fourth on the grid to achieve an astonishing victory in Monza. After the race, Team Principal Fred Vasseur discussed whether he believes the team’s latest floor upgrades were really responsible for leading the team to victory.
Due to the tightness of the field, Vasseur believes that the effects of the upgrades are most significant in qualifying. “Every single bit makes the difference. But for one hundredth I'm keen to go for it. At the end of the day we had four cars in two hundredths yesterday (in qualifying), and for sure you can say that the upgrade is crucial. ... It's in qualy where you have six to eight cars in one or two tenths that every single upgrade will pay,” Vasseur told GPBlog and other media after the race.
Vasseur attributes the overall victory to strategy rather than the new upgrades, saying "In the end, the pace today was more linked to the tyre management."
Will the upgrades lead to more success in the rest of the season?
Despite the team's elation following Leclerc’s Monza victory, Vasseur remains realistic about Ferrari’s performance for the rest of the season. Vasseur stated, “Honestly it's quite difficult to understand the impact of the upgrade on a track like Monza because we are in such different configurations compared to the rest of the season.”
The upgrades will next be on show in Azerbaijan from the 13th - 15th September.
