Alonso is also dissatisfied: 'Team is aware of the situation'
- Jeroen Immink
Fernando Alonso isn't having the best season. The Spaniard - who managed several podiums in 2023 - is now only ninth in the F1 standings with a car that does not work as well as he would like. Alonso himself has since commented on the difficult situation at Aston Martin.
In 2023, Alonso was still fighting for third place in the standings. Alonso secured eight podiums and seemed to be the best driver of the season after Verstappen. But like Verstappen, Alonso has been struggling with his Formula 1 car lately. His best result in 2024 was a sixth-place finish in Japan and Canada.
Alonso explains
Alonso is not happy with his current Aston Martin and is also concerned that this situation could last for some time. "Until we have an upgrade on the car, this is what it is. And this is not good enough. Not good enough in Monza. Not good in Zandvoort, in Spa, in Hungary. So I don't think there's going to be a big change in Baku, Singapore or Austin unless we bring new parts," revealed Alonso, who recently extended his contract at Aston Martin through 2026.
However, Alonso refuses to throw in the towel and wants to take steps with Aston Martin. "That's the plan. The team is aware of the situation. The team is working flat out. So, we keep united. We keep pushing. Last weekend was one point. Today was close to two points. And that will be our battle," Alonso said.
