Adrian Newey will continue his Formula 1 career at Aston Martin after leaving Red Bull Racing. The 65-year-old design engineer will join Lawrence Stroll's Silverstone team on March 1 2025, and will play a key role in creating their F1 car for the 2026 Formula 1 season when the new rules and regulations will be introduced. He will take up the role Managing Technical Partner.
"Adrian Newey has committed his long-term future to the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team. The acclaimed British designer will begin working at the team’s Silverstone HQ from 1 March 2025 taking up a new role as Managing Technical Partner," stated the Aston Martin press release.
"The appointment of Adrian Newey is yet another statement of Aston Martin Aramco’s Formula One ambitions. Adrian has an unmatched record of success: he has led F1 teams to 25 Formula One World titles, establishing his position as the greatest technical mind in the sport’s history."
Newey to Aston Martin after leaving Red Bull
Newey's decision to move to Aston Martin became somewhat of an open secret. Speculation and rumours about his destination started as soon as his Red Bull exit was announced earlier in the season. At least half of the F1 grid were mentioned as possible destinations, but Ferrari and later Aston Martin appeared to be the two front runners.
In the end, Newey has decided to move to Aston Martin. Newey will work with team boss Mike Krack and drivers Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso. Newey has previously expressed his desire to work with Alonso.
In recent weeks, rumours of a move to Aston Martin started to grow. Team owner Stroll did not exactly debunk those speculations, indicating that he had been talking to Newey "not for months, but for years." It has since been confirmed that Newey will continue his career with the British team.
Months of speculation about Newey ends
Initially, Newey was strongly linked to Ferrari, but his manager, Eddie Jordan, quashed those rumours. It increased the hype over Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari for the 2025 season, but the two highly successful members of the F1 paddock will not join forces. Team boss Fred Vasseur recently explained that talks between Newey and his team broke down early on. Besides Ferrari and Aston Martin, Williams, McLaren, and Alpine were also mentioned.
Williams team boss James Vowles openly admitted he would love to bring Newey in, while McLaren CEO Zak Brown recently indicated he was happy with the current technical team. Alpine advisor Flavio Briatore did not rule it out but joked that the designer was "too cheap" for his team. Mercedes was the only top team that did not seem to pursue Newey.
