According to owner Lawrence Stroll, Adrian Newey's switch from Red Bull Racing to Aston Martin F1 was written in the stars. The Canadian revealed this after the design engineer officially joined Aston Martin from 2025 onwards, with initial talks between Newey and Stroll senior arising sometime earlier.

Stroll Sr.: 'Newey and I already spoke three years ago'

Stroll reveals that he has spoken to Newey many times before. "We really did begin to speak briefly about three years back. The most recent talks in earnest began after I read Adrian's news of his departure. Once I read that, I said, well, again, I believe this is meant to be," the Canadian revealed.

After Red Bull and Newey announced they were parting ways, Stroll immediately looked to sign the Brit. Now after sealing his signature, the father of Formula 1 driver Lance Stroll is sure that the combination of Newey and Aston Martin will be a success. "I believe Adrian will share my vision. He's a super smart guy. So it was really when I read the April departure announcement."

What kind of role will Newey have at Aston Martin?

Newey will take full charge of designing the Aston Martin car from 2025. The aim is then to compete with Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes in 2026 - when the new regulations are introduced. "As I mentioned, we have a strong team, some of which Adrian has already worked with. Adrian is going to be the technical managing partner of that team. So on a day-to-day basis, he'll be here, full commitment, full-time committed to Formula 1, giving leadership and direction to his team," Stroll said.
