The media in the United Kingdom focused on two major storylines on Sunday night, after the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. While Oscar Piastri completed an outstanding victory, Lando Norris managed to finish ahead of Max Verstappen after a difficult qualifying session for the Briton. Therefore, the British media were full of praise for the McLaren drivers, but mainly for Norris.

BBC Sport

"Lando Norris drove an extraordinary race to catch and pass title rival Max Verstappen as his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri won an engrossing Azerbaijan Grand Prix," the national public broadcaster's website reacted to the events of the Azerbaijan GP. Oliver Bearman also received some praise, after the British driver has now scored points in his first two Grands Prix in F1, before getting a full-time seat in 2025. "Lewis Hamilton, who had a quiet race from the back of the grid after an engine penalty, took ninth for Mercedes, while the final point was scored by Briton Oliver Bearman, impressive on his debut for Haas."

The Mirror

The Mirror not only praised Norris for finishing ahead of his Dutch rival but also for now taking the lead in the constructors' standings together with Piastri. "McLaren took pole position in the teams' championship as Lando Norris kept his title hopes alive with a superb comeback drive. Oscar Piastri duelled with pole-sitter Charles Leclerc but came out on top to secure his second career victory. And Norris came from 15th on the grid to finish fourth, ahead of title rival Max Verstappen who had started eight places ahead."

Daily Mail

The Daily Mail were also could only praise Lando Norris' comeback drive, after finishing only in P17 in Qualifying. "It looked all over, and then the body twitched. That is how Lando Norris’s world championship hopes refused to die in the space of a topsy-turvy 24 hours." However, it was also underlined that Oscar Piastri did superbly as well in Baku. "Actually, the star in a captivating race was driving the other McLaren, Oscar Piastri, the 23-year-old Australian whose sorcery was barely believable. Piastri, with nerves of ice, then defended like there was no tomorrow as Leclerc’s red Ferrari flashed again and again like a warning light in his mirrors. They were line astern for as long as the race went on."
