Last week, it was announced that Adrian Newey will join Aston Martin and design their Formula 1 car from 2025. The highly regarded designer comes over from Red Bull Racing, where he enjoyed years of success. Former F1 world champion Nigel Mansell thinks Ferrari have missed out on a game-changing opportunity.

Mansell critical of Ferrari

According to Mansell, Ferrari have made a mistake in not doing more to tempt Newey to their team. "Ferrari, I love them. I love them. I really do, but they lost an opportunity because whoever gets Adrian Newey is almost assured of having a fantastic few years. And I think Aston Martin have done something very special in securing his services," the Brit said to Topoffshoresportsbooks.com.

By signing the designer, Mansell thinks Aston Martin have struck gold. The former Ferrari and Williams driver thinks Newey will make a big impact at his new team. "I think people have underestimated as well that I don't think Adrian was totally happy in the last few years with Red Bull and what a fantastic job he's done and I think now being in the UK, being with Aston Martin, I think Adrian will find a little bit more energy and a bit more direction," Mansell said.

Newey is leaving Red Bull after almost 20 seasons, during which he has enjoyed the greatest successes in the Austrian-owned team's history. Newey is known for designing championship-winning cars and has helped Red Bull achieve six constructors championships.
