F1 Today | Norris dominates Singapore GP and Verstappen's FIA row continues
An action-packed day of Formula 1 action has just concluded in Singapore, and there's a lot to unpack. Lando Norris won dominantly at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, cutting into championship rival Max Verstappen's lead by another seven points. The Dutchman's spat with the FIA has also continued, as he once again kept things short and sweet in the post-race press conference. Also, has Daniel Ricciardo's time in Formula 1 come to an end? All signs suggest that the Australian has driven in his last F1 race.
Norris wins the Singapore Grand Prix in dominant fashion:
Lando Norris dominated in the Singapore Grand Prix. At one point, Norris had a half-a-minute lead, and he wasn't challenged. The McLaren driver did have two lucky escapes after contact with the wall. Verstappen limited his title damage by finishing second. Oscar Piastri took home important points for McLaren with his third-place finish. With six Grands Prix and three sprints to go in the 2024 season, Verstappen still leads by 52 points. In what could be Ricciardo's final race of his career, the Australian took the fastest lap bonus point to give his former teammate and Red Bull (potentially) one final favour. McLaren continues to look blisteringly quick, and Norris will be full of belief after another impressive result.
Verstappen's community service spat continues:
Max Verstappen's protest against the FIA has continued. The Dutchman had little to say at the press conference after the race in Singapore. Asked if, as on Saturday, he preferred to answer questions outside the official FIA press room, the Dutchman responded: "It's been a long day. Yes." The governing body gave Verstappen community service for using the word 'f***ed' during the press conference on Thursday. This created a kind of outrage within the paddock, and fellow F1 drivers and key players have supported Verstappen. Hamilton even encouraged Verstappen not to carry out his penalty and said he 'certainly wouldn't'.
"You know, you should be able to show emotions in a way, that's what racing is about. Any sport. Anyone walking around on the pitch if they get tackled or get pushed or they're not happy with something or there's a frustrating moment or something that they get asked about, it's quite normal that there can be a sort of reaction," Verstappen explained post-race.
Has Ricciardo's F1 career come to a conclusion?
The Singapore Grand Prix is widely expected to be Daniel Ricciardo's last in Formula 1. The Australian finished in 18th place but secured the fastest lap in the closing stages. He was also voted as driver of the day and spoke emotionally about his career post-race. "In the end, we were not really in any position, so we tried to go for the fastest lap, and I guess it [could help] Max out by Abu Dhabi, maybe. Maybe there's a Christmas present coming if he wins by one point," Ricciardo said after a gruelling Grand Prix.
"Yeah, a lot of emotions. I'm aware it could be it [the end] and I think I'm also just exhausted after the race. Just a flood of many emotions, feelings and exhaustion." Ricciardo said in tears. If it is to be his last in the sport, 'The Honey Badgers' 13-year career has provided fans with some incredible memories along the way.
