Can Red Bull claw back ground on McLaren? Verstappen and Norris react!
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are not getting carried away by McLaren's significant lead in the Formula 1 Constructors' World Championship. The British team have opened up a 41 point gap to Red Bull Racing but they remain cautious about how the picture in Formula 1 can change. Max Verstappen doesn't rule out a comeback but knows his team must improve the car.
"We focus on performance. If the car is quick, then naturally, both championships are easier to get," Verstappen told reporters when asked if Red Bull still has a chance in the Constructors' Championship. McLaren's were looking likely to take the lead after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, but it looked like they would only do so by one or two points. Sergio Perez crashed with Carlos Sainz and couldn't finish the race. Red Bull lost a lot of points with that crash.
Verstappen got the most out of the Red Bull car in Singapore, but Perez didn't reach Q3 and could only recover to P10 in the race. Meanwhile, both McLaren drivers finished on the podium and the Woking-based team extended their lead significantly.
This is how Norris and Piastri react
Piastri, one of the two McLaren drivers, talked a little more extensively about the current situation. "Trajectory has been in the right direction for a long time now. We've got clearly a quick car underneath us. We've got both of us scoring big points consistently. I feel like we're doing a good job as a whole team. But you can never take it for granted how quickly things can turn around. So we'll see," the Australian told reporters.
Norris, Verstappen's biggest rival in the championship among drivers, thinks his teammate is right. "The same," said the Bristol-based Briton. There are still six Grands Prix and three sprint races on the calendar this season.
