Oscar Piastri helping Lando Norris against Max Verstappen COTA

Piastri has different approach to helping Norris: 'Then that works'

With six weekends to go in the Formula One calendar, it's all to play for in the drivers' standings. While pundits and analysts continued to suggest to McLaren they need to clear about having a number one driver this year to help Lando Norris, for Oscar Piastri, it is still a secondary goal, he said in Austin, even as the Australian driver partially declared his support.

Entering the final run of Grands Prix in F1, the gap between Norris and Max Verstappen stands at 52 points in the standings. While McLaren have been reluctant to declare that the Australian would need to help Norris at least this season, many see that a clear advantage Max Verstappen does have with Red Bull and Sergio Perez.

"I think for me trying to just go into every race and performing as best as I can is the biggest thing I can do. These circuits are ones I've only driven in F1 once for a lot of them, in these next six races," Piastri began at the Circuit of the Americas.

As it is only the second year of driver in the competition, he will still compete at tracks he has only driven at once in his entire career. "There's a lot of things that I want to try and work on from the last time I was here, 12 months ago. Austin, I did five laps in the race. So I just have a lot of things to sort of improve and figure out. But definitely just trying to improve and finish as high as I can."

'Then that works as well'

"I think naturally if I do a good enough job, then that'll be firstly giving myself a good result, but if it's a position to help Lando, then that works as well," the driver continued about the battle for the drivers' championship.

"If the car's capable of winning, which we hope it will be, then I want to try and win. And if I can't win, then I want to finish second. If I can't finish second, I want to finish third. So I'm just trying to perform as best as I can, and if it means that my finishing position helps out in the championship, then it helps too," Piastri concluded.
