Norris on the edge: 'Verstappen was extremely fast there'

Lando Norris was extremely proud of earning pole position in for Sunday's race at the Circuit of the Americas. The McLaren called his lap 'beautiful' after jumping out his car, and then said it was the best of his career. After qualifying, he explained where he had to improve to keep Max Verstappen behind.

Lando Norris had to respond to title rival Max Verstappen in qualifying of the US Grand Prix. The Dutchman got pole position in sprint qualifying, then finished two positions ahead of the Briton during the Sprint. Verstappen still could have overtaken his rival, but his second lap was eliminated after George Russell crashed in Sector 3.

Norris proud of 'best lap of his career'

Norris said he had to take more risks on his final lap. He even made a small mistake exiting the penultimate corner, but it turned out to be enough. When then asked where he had found time then, he said, "It was just a bit everywhere honestly, but of course, the high speed is a little bit is where we struggled a touch comparing to the Red Bulls, especially Max has been extremely quick in the first sector and the high speed."

The McLaren driver continued: "So trying to limit that a little bit more was a good start and then just the braking (in) the final sector you know from (turn) 12 to 16, as soon as one part goes wrong it can all fall away quite quickly, and again just hooked everything up, probably the first time all weekend and probably the last but, it just came together perfectly so, it was a very very good lap. I'd probably say quite confidently the best of my career."
