Is Verstappen worried about a grid penalty? The Red Bull driver responds!
- Nicole Mulder
Max Verstappen is not worried about receiving a grid penalty after the Red Bull driver was plagued by engine problems on Friday at the Mexican Grand Prix weekend. The Dutchman had to climb out of the car early in FP2 and only completed a handful of laps across both sessions. He called it a "useless day".
Is Verstappen worried about a grid penalty?
During the first free practice session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, Verstappen reported a problem with his engine. He had also suffered damage to his floor because he had driven over a tool in the pit lane. Later, Red Bull stated there were no problems with Verstappen's engine, but during FP2, the championship leader had to pit again.
"From the engine side, we are checking. I don't know exactly what it is. From my side, pretty much useless day. Did like four or five laps, so there's not much to read into at the moment," said a blunt Verstappen when speaking to F1TV after the second free practice session, which was dominated by Pirelli's tyre test.
Verstappen was then asked if he was worried about having to take an engine penalty. "No, that will be all right." He cannot explain how he feels about the car. "I can't tell you. I never really had a good run. Four or five laps in total, and that's even with some long run laps in it. So, yeah, day to forget."
