Martin Brundle calls Max Verstappen short-fused after Mexican Grand Prix

Brundle: 'I'm so in awe of Verstappen, but I hate it when he does that...'

Martin Brundle appreciates Max Verstappen's talents in Formula 1, but admits he "hated" the Dutchman's actions during the Mexican Grand Prix. The former F1 driver believes Verstappen had a 'red-mist' moment who went beyond the limit.

The first ten-second penalty for Verstappen was for pushing an opponent [in this case Lando Norris] off the track. Verstappen's second ten-second penalty was for going off track and taking advantage of it. During live commentatary, Brundle argued that Verstappen was downright dangerous during the incident with Norris.

How did Brundle view Verstappen's actions in Mexico

Brundle expanded on his thoughts regarding Verstappen in the post race reflection. He zoomed in on the second penalty and heavily critised Verstappen's approach to the corner. "The next one is just a red mist moment and actually a ridiculous moment. He just left his foot on the throttle and has taken the pair of them off," Brundle said on Sky, before suggesting that he should've been given a drive through penalty for that action.

"I'm so in awe of Max and I hate it when he does that sort of thing because he's better than that. He's too good to drive like that. But I honestly think that was a short-fuse, a red mist. I think it was all to do with the turn four, the previous incident as it were," Brundle added before looking at the broader situation with Red Bull's car.

"I think he's carrying some frustration because he's got third fastest car on track at the moment. Yes, there is that to it. But we know he's feisty, we know he's aggressive. That's what you want to see in Formula 1 racing. That's what we've always enjoyed whether it was Senna versus Prost, or Senna versus Mansell, or Mansell versus Piquet all through the decades. We're above that but then there is a limit, and that second incident is way past the limit," Brundle concluded.

Verstappen himself didn't want to talk too much about the penalties after the race, but did stress the peformance of his RB20 put him in that position. It's something he wants to see improved before the Brazilian Grand Prix at the weekend.
