Mexican media react to Perez result: 'Only good news: it's over'
- Corwin Kunst
The Mexican media have been supportive in the past, but even they could not ignore the problems after watching qualifying and the race in Mexico. Perez had a terrible weekend in his own country. 'The only good news for Checo at the Mexican GP is that it is finally over'.
'Pérez finishes last after a penalty, in one of the worst Mexican GPs of his career,' Esto headlined after the veteran's 17th-place finish. Perez crossed the finish line last after Yuki Tsunoda, Alexander Albon and Fernando Alonso retired. 'The only good news for Checo at the Mexican GP is that it is finally over. Nothing went right for the man from Guadalajara and the race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez only confirmed that by crossing the finish line in 17th place.'
The teammate's start still looked promising, but he received a five-second time penalty after a false start. After his pit stop and redeeming his penalty, all hopes of a good result seemed dashed. 'From then on, Perez could never compete,' the outlet continued. 'Red Bull had him come in on the last lap to set the fastest lap, but he didn't even manage it. All in all, it was Perez's worst ever Mexican Grand Prix. Of his nine appearances - not counting the two DNFs - this is the first time he did not score a single point.'
Criticism for Perez
They are not too positive at Récord either. 'Checo experienced a far from a good Mexican Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver went from better to worse over the weekend and ended the disaster with a 17th place in his home race. "Never give up," is Perez's motto and he needs to apply that to himself now more than ever. He had another bad weekend, but he says he is confident he will come back stronger. On a turbulent day, he did briefly flirt with a historic comeback, but nevertheless, he finished at the back of the grid.'
