Perez accepts harsh truths of 'most disappointing' Mexican GP weekend
Sergio Perez has accepted that the Mexican Grand Prix was the "most disappointing weekend" of the season. This came a few days after he acknowledged he was having a "terrible season". The Red Bull Racing driver believes a points finish was possible but has pinned the blame on the damage he sustained in a fight with Red Bull Junior Liam Lawson, who was in the Visa Cash App RB car.
Perez honest about poor home race in Mexico
Perez failed to escape Q1 and started 18th on the grid. The Mexican then made a mistake on the grid by starting the race too far forward. He did jump up to P13, but had to serve a five-second penalty for his blunder. He then battled with Lawson, and picked up damage which prevented him from completing a recovery race. It meant Perez crossed the line last out of all the finishers.
"Mexico was the most disappointing weekend of my season. I wanted to have a special weekend and as a Team we didn’t walk away with what we deserved. We need more from my car to start to compete more and that’s got to be the aim before Brazil," Perez said in his preview of the Brazil GP.
However, Red Bull faces an additional challenge at the Interlagos circuit. "Unfortunately we suffered a lot of damage in Mexico, so, once again, it’ll be down to my guys to get my car in the best possible place for the next weekend, in a very short time frame," Perez continued.
The Mexican, who was loudly cheered on in his home race, attributes last place to the damage he sustained to his F1 car: "The Sprint gives us the chance to score extra points and we’ll be looking to do that. I was on for a points finish in Mexico and if we can execute a more complete weekend I’m confident we can leave Brazil in a better place."
