Liam Lawson and Sergio Perez will possibly never become friends. The two were in a heated battle in Mexico City, as both drivers aim to be Max Verstappen's teammate at Red Bull Racing in the upcoming season.

There was much discussion after the Mexico City Grand Prix about what happened between Sergio Perez and Liam Lawson, after an incident that damaged the Mexican's RB20. Revisiting the incident, the VCARB driver stated that he didn't want to "obviously crash into any car, but especially a Red Bull car".

"And it wasn't obviously my target in the moment in the incident either. I was trying to avoid that. So obviously looking back, maybe the things I could have done differently, I could have cut the chicane and avoided it completely," the driver from New Zealand began.

"But in the moment I'm racing as well, and you have a split second to make this decision. So it's something I've spoken to the team about afterwards and I've reflected on and I'll learn from."

Lawson is looking for the right balance

Then at Interlagos, the two faced off once again on track. This time, the drivers could keep it clean. Lawson also thrives to find balance, as he wants to earn a promotion to Red Bull, but he doesn't want to annoy what could be his future team either.

"I think it depends on how you look at it. Some people might look at it like it was way too aggressive [in Mexico City] and other people might not. Obviously I'm going to drive how I'm going to drive and do the best job I can. So we all obviously make mistakes and there's stuff I reflect on. But, I'm also a racer and that's also what I was trying to do," Lawson continued.

The driver also understands that crashing into an RB20 is not the best for his job application. "Yes, for sure, but obviously the target is not to crash into a Red Bull car. So as I said, the incident itself, maybe there were things I could have done differently to avoid it. But as I said, those are things that now I'll learn from going forward."
