Vowles: 'Red Bull need to figure out seats they have and don't for 2025'
- Sandy van Wijngaarden
James Vowles reaffirmed that there is interest in Franco Colapinto coming from Red Bull Racing. The British team boss said that teams interested in the Argentine driver "need to figure out what seats they have and don't have going into next year."
Franco Colapinto made a big impression after he replaced Logan Sargeant at Williams in 2024. His first Grand Prix came at the Italian Grand Prix, and since then, some super performances have caught the eye of many teams as he showcases why he deserves a seat in the premier class of motorsport of the 2025 season.
One team that has shown plenty of interest in Colapinto is Red Bull. In principle, there is one seat available at their sister team Visa Cash App RB for next year, but it is no secret that almost any contract can be undercut.
Red Bull needs to figure it out for itself first
James Vowles, team boss at Williams, confirmed Red Bull's interest in Colapinto in Qatar. He was asked about how the team want to keep the Argentinian prepared if he does not have a seat next year: "If Franco is not in a racing seat next year, we'll have a historic car, two-year-old car, he'll be running that plenty in order to keep him up to speed," the Brit said.
"I've done this before in a previous life with Esteban [Ocon] when he took a year out, and you're able to see Esteban's here today and still a strong driver. There are things we can do effectively around it to maintain his strength."
According to Vowles, Red Bull and VCARB must first figure out for themselves what they will do with their available seats: "There is interest, but more than that, I can't really say at this point in time. I think those teams need to figure out what seats they have and don't have going into next year before we can ascertain where he's going, if he's going there," the Williams team boss concluded.
