Perez on Verstappen adapting to the RB20 better: 'I just couldn't'
- Estéban den Toom
Ahead of the Abu Dhabi weekend, Sergio Perez was asked whether his form was affected by the ground effect of Formula 1 cars. In his answer, the Mexican explained that the aforementioned reason had nothing to do with his disappointing performance on the track. He indicated that teammate Max Verstappen was just able to adapt to the car better.
Perez does not think the ground effect was the cause of his resent results. "Not really. I think when you look back at it, I was in the fight in 22. I was in the fight in 23. I had some tough moments in 23, obviously, but then 24 started really well. I think we just took a wrong direction."
'Was easier for Verstappen because of his style'
Perez then pointed out that the biggest setback of the season was the difference in his and Verstappen's driving styles. "It impacts more one driver than the other. The way it impacted me, it was a lot harder than, for example, it did to Max because of his driving style. He can cope with a very neutral balance, and I couldn't. So that was the main deficit."
Last Monday, Red Bull's most important personnel, including Christian Horner and Helmut Marko, met for a meeting, evaluating Sergio Perez's performance. Then, the decision on their final line-up at Red Bull Racing and VCARB will be announced.
