Man United fan Verstappen doesn't shy away from Liverpool invite: 'I'll go'
While Max Verstappen, alongside supporting PSV, has a softspot for Manchester United and Barcelona as well, he was already invited by Liverpool's Dutch players Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo to watch the Reds play. Van Dijk also visited the driver in Monaco in 2024. Will the roles be reversed one day soon and the four-time world champion then head to Anfield?
A visit to Anfield
While for Verstappen it is not an easy task to go to football games as he has a busy calendar, the now four-time world champion would be happy to visit Anfield Road, even as he has a softspot for Manchester United. On the other hand Dutch players and manager Arne Slot are also succeeding with the team, something that is also exciting for the Red Bull Racing driver, and a previous visit was already on the cards. "Virgil [van Dijk] keeps inviting me to come to a game and I will definitely do it. I'm not that idiot that hates another club. When I see Virgil play or Cody [Gakpo], when they do well at Liverpool, that excites me as well," he told Mirror Sport.
The two teams will face off in the Premier League today, with Liverpool leading the league, while Manchester United are fourteenth. Verstappen also explained why he likes the Red Devils. "I just like the story behind when Sir Alex Ferguson was the manager. Initially, the Dutch connection with [Ruud] van Nistelrooy and [Robin] van Persie also came in. You become a fan and you start reading more into the club, how they have achieved a lot of their success. It just inspires me."
Favoured player and now manager Van Nistelrooy was not kept by the team after he was the interim manager, after Erik ten Hag was let go. The former stiker now leads Leicester City. "I was a little bit sad to see Van Nistelrooy go completely out of the club. But then he got a great role at Leicester now, so I'm also very excited to see how he will do."
About the teams current manager, Ruben Amorim, the Dutch driver added: "It’s going to be a big task, but he's an exciting manager. He's still very young. I think he has a lot of potential and I just hope that he brings the best out of the players, of himself. I hope he will bring the club back to the top."
