Critical, but also admiring: This is what Croft appreciates about Max Verstappen
- Ludo van Denderen
David Croft, the commentator for British Sky Sports, which brings Formula 1 into living rooms in the UK and elsewhere, was critical of Max Verstappen at an Autosport fan meeting on Saturday. Yet the Brit says he also admires the Dutchman.
From his comments during the Grand Prix, it was clear on several occasions, and during the Autosport show Croft made sure to repeat it: There are times when he does not appreciate Max Verstappen. "When he goes too far and when we saw in Mexico for instance, the two incidents with Lando [Norris] there. Then I've got a bit of a problem with it. And sometimes when he's on the team radio and he makes the odd comment, then occasionally I get a bit of a problem with that," the Briton began.
But at the same time, Croft also sees a winner in the Dutchman. According to the commentator, one should not underestimate the high level at which the Red Bull Racing driver has been performing for years. A simple statistic is the most tangible proof of that, according to Croft.
Croft praises Verstappen
"Spain 2022 was the last time Max didn't lead the Drivers' championship, You imagine getting out of bed every morning trying to keep yourself on top for nearly four years? That's a hell of a toll. But that's just the kind of... I like a little exchange about Max first thing in the morning. It wakes us all up," Croft said, indicating that Verstappen is performing something very special indeed.
