Verstappen's former team boss lashes out at mechanics: 'Are too lazy'
Former Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost doesn't agree with the current F1 season being too long. While many think it is a very overwhelming experience, the Austrian is not on the same page regarding this matter.
"I think 24 races is completely okay," Tost told Sport Marke Medien in Munich. "People always say the mechanics are overworked. That's a complete joke. They are not overworked at all."
In the past, according to the former team principal, mechanics had to complete more tasks as well. "We had the race at the weekend and we tested on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. In the beginning, we even had two cars. And it was always the same technicians and engineers. I never heard a complaint from them then."
Tost thinks F1 mechanics shouldn't complain about working 24 weekends
According to Tost, the current mechanics are therefore becoming lazy. "Formula 1 now has a curfew, which means it ends at 9pm. Until 8am the next morning. Jesus, what more do they want? They get to work in Formula 1, which is a privilege. All this work-life balance, all this nonsense. It's totally pointless. You don't need something like that. It's something for people who are too lazy to work."
Moreover, the Austrian would prefer to see even more Grands Prix added to the calendar, that is already made up of 24 weekends.. "The money is made during the races. The more races you drive, the more money you earn in Formula 1. You have to drive as many races as possible. That could be 26. The year has 52 weeks. Every second week would make sense. And I'm not saying that now because I'm retired. I've always said that."
Tost also explained he also argued for more weekends when previously talking to his colleagues. "I always had heated discussions with my former colleagues. They said: 'That's way too many. 18 to 20 games is the maximum'. I used to ask them, 'What are you guys anyway? Are you a race team or a holiday team?' Tost concluded.
