Liam Lawson reacts to the first day of testing with Red Bull Racing's RB21
Today at 18:20

Liam Lawson completed his first winter testing session ever. The New Zealander has so far felt comfortable in the car and states Red Bull Racing have a good idea of where to improve the RB21 ahead of the start of the season in Melbourne.

That Lawson is as excited as he is, may very well be a sign of what's to come. After the Austrian team had gotten through the first testing day, the New Zealander spoke about his first winter testing session in a press release issued by Red Bull Racing. "I had so much fun out there today and it was so good to finally drive the new car properly and do some laps."

How did he feel aboard the RB21? Has the time managed to get on top of the issues that troubled their 2024 campaign? "It feels okay but obviously it is very early days, so it’s very much about learning at the moment. For me, there is a lot more to come because I need to learn a lot, moving teams, but from a Team side we are just trying to learn about the new car, and optimise these testing days."

One of the best signs during winter testing is something as apparently simple as completing the run programmes, which according to Lawson, Red Bull were able to do. "We had a plan of test items, and we managed to go through the whole plan, which is always good. We go into tomorrow with a lot more running and a better idea of where to improve the car."

Lawson agrees with Verstappen's comments about the RB21

As far as where the Austrian team ranks up against its rivals, Melbourne will provide a clearer picture, with the New Zelander agreeing with teammate, Max Verstappen's comments regarding the RB21. "It’s hard to tell where we are in terms of pace but the car feels good to drive and comfortable. Testing is just as important to me, as it is for the Team to learn about the car. It’s crucial to maximise these days before Melbourne," concluded Lawson.
