Five top teams in 2025? 'I think it's too early for that'

- Ludo van Denderen
Was it realism or rather a yearning back to days gone by. In any case, Andrea Stella, McLaren's team boss, let slip that the Williams looked so strong during the Thursday test that it might be five rather than four top teams in '25. However, Carlos Sainz, one of the Williams drivers, thinks that thought is a little too optimistic.
Friends they are, Stella and Sainz. So when the Spaniard hears what the McLaren team boss said about him, Sainz first responds with a smile. "I think that's why you called him my friend, no?," Sainz told a select group of media, including GPblog.
"I think in his head, I think he maybe also kind of, would like to see Williams up there this year, but I think he's, honestly, speaking a bit too soon for Williams yet. I don't think we've done the necessary step to be fighting with the top teams this year."
Sainz did not see real top teams turn on
Sainz is happy with the development of his new employer, though. "For sure, we've improved the car and we're going in the right direction. But, first of all, it's too early days to tell. Obviously, from yesterday, you could see I was trying, and I was trying to go quick, which in testing is not normally the case. And I'm sure the top teams are are not trying yet," said the Spaniard.
