Williams a threat to McLaren and Red Bull? 'Lap time not hard to achieve'
It was a surprising sight that may cause the eyes of old school F1 fans to glisten: Williams has been at the top of the time sheets during the past two days of winter testing in Bahrain. Is this a good omen for the team lead by James Vowles ahead of the start of the 2025 season in Australia?
Carlos Sainz jumped on the car Thursday and went quickest of the day. Teammate, Alexander Albon occupied the top spot on Friday as well, but in the end was pipped to it by Mercedes driver George Russell, and Red Bull Racing champion, Max Verstappen. However it was not an easy day in the Bahrain International Circuti for the drivers.
"Day three done with! It was a tricky day - I don’t know what it was like for the other drivers, but the morning was really difficult with the wind, and we didn’t really get much of a rhythm," said Albon in a press release issued by Williams following the end of the third and final day of winter testing. There were also more complications than the weather for the Williams team.
"We had a couple of issues on the car which delayed things as well, so we were struggling a little bit to get going," yet the team lead by Vowles was able to turn it around during the second part of the test. "Finally, we got a good long run in and a decent lowish performance run style, ending the day with some more long runs. So all in all, I’m positive," adds Albon.
'Lap time not hard to achieve'
McLaren Team Principal, Andrea Stella had a careful eye on Williams yesterday. Does Albon agree with the Italian's assessment? "I do think we need to look at some data with a couple of areas we need to focus on. The good thing is, we know where the lap time is and I don’t think it’s that hard to achieve, so we’ll do some work around that and get ready for Melbourne," concluded the Williams driver.
