Mueller, on being F1's first female race engineer: 'It's actually quite sad'

Haas F1's Laura Mueller will as of 2025 be the first female race engineer in the history of F1, a fact she considers to be 'quite sad', which however, may have a positive impact on the main issue behind the lack of female technical personnel in the racing series.

'Quite sad to be the first female race engineer in F1'

During Haas' International Women's Day celebration, the team did an interview with Laura Mueller, Esteban Ocon's race engineer for the 2025 season, and the first ever female race engineer in the history of Formula One, a fact that for Mueller is secondary. "Personally, I just want to focus on doing a good job and getting the best out of the team and the car", she began.

However, elaborating further on the subject, a sincere Mueller reacted to being the first woman to break through into F1 in her position. "For me, being the first female race engineer in F1 is actually quite sad. But I think the problem with that is just representation," she added, before seeing the power her being in the position she is could have for the future. "So if my face being on TV can make girls and young women think they can achieve this too, I'm actually quite happy."

With F1's impending return to action, she was also asked regarding her expectations. What can Haas achieve, not only in the Australian Grand Prix next week in Melbourne, but also in 2025. A pragmatic Mueller replied: "I think I never really have expectations and also we won't know until qualifying or even the race. But so far, I think there's nothing saying we can't be on par with our performance last year or even improve from that. So I'm quite positive," Ocon's race engineer concluded.
