Lawson sums up dramatic Red Bull debut: 'That and also just being stupid'
Liam Lawson's first qualifying session for Red Bull did not turn out the way he had hoped for. This Saturday, he first failed to set a lap time because of a power unit issues, and he then got eliminated in Q1 already. The New Zealander reacts to his result.
Lawson caught out by a mix of events
"It was within a better window, which was positive. So, yeah, I think obviously for me, just not doing the laps was made it pretty tough. But yes, obviously where we're starting, it's going to be very, very tough tomorrow," Lawson began about qualifying to GPblog among others in Australia.
The driver from New Zealand also called his marked 'stupid', after he also had a setback in FP3 with a power unit issue. Therefore, he could hardly spend any time on track. "I think missing P3 this morning was really costly for us. Just not really doing much qualifying preparation for today. And I don't think it's car specific. It's not like this car is way harder to drive and that that's why I made mistakes. It's just I think tough track, lack of driving and then being stupid."
As a result, he is set to start from P18 on the grid. Therefore, he hopes the weather report will be correct tomorrow. "I would love rain. I think it's hard to overtake. So where we're starting, if it's dry, it's going to be pretty hard. So rain would be nice."
The FIA have previously confirmed to our website that they are looking at alternative start times for Sunday. Lawson would prefer to just compete instead, saying "we have rain tyres, so we should just race," he concluded.
