Liam Lawson looks set to be ousted by Red Bull Racing early in the season. Christijan Albers, a former F1 driver and former team boss in the sport, fails to understand how Helmut Marko seems to have already dropped the New Zealander.
Credit where credit is due, is Albers' message in the Telegraph podcast. Helmut Marko was the man who brought Max Verstappen into Formula 1 as early as the age of 16. "But then if you go and see how he (Marko, ed.) has been handling it lately?", Albers said.
'Marko's interview really, really bad'
The Dutchman is referring to an interview with Viaplay, for which Albers is an analyst. "I think that interview is really very bad. You hope that after three years he understands how to handle that with the press. He said everything would be analysed, the same as Christian Horner said. But then I think, haven't you learned anything? With all due respect, you've destroyed Gasly, Albon, we've had Perez... Perez does give you a whole year to get there quietly."
According to Albers, Marko should have supported Lawson much more emphatically, instead of casting doubt on the New Zealander's future. On the contrary, Marko was much more diplomatic about Yuki Tsunoda, even praising him for his development. "I don't understand that. So now he can say that."
"I have to be honest that Yuki has become much calmer over the board radio. I think he is really committed to getting better. So he can steer into that politically and then he gives an interview, where he just doesn't stand behind his driver," Albers once again alludes to Lawson.
