Aston Martin Red Bull Racing star Max Verstappen will be starting on the soft compound rather than the medium tyre, as the Dutchman couldn't risk running on mediums in Q2 after he only was able to do one flying lap.

The 21-year-old spent the majority of Q2 in the garage, as he reported some engine issues that needed instant resolving. It was feared that Verstappen couldn't run at all, meaning he'd have to start from P15, but the six-time Grand Prix winner eventually could log the fourth-best time.

In Q3, Verstappen came close to grabbing pole position but he got his angles all wrong in turn 8, meaning he had to settle for P2.

"Not a bad result, but we have to be realistic: Ferrari were quick and they had problems," the ever realistic Verstappen told Ziggo Sport.

"However, first starting row is good. We had some problems with the engine mode, which made me lose power. I had to come in to sort it out, but it got fixed."

Because of the issue, Verstappen ran on softs rather than on mediums in Q2, meaning he'll start on the same compound on Sunday.

"I had to [run on softs]. It's because I had the engine problem, if not I also would've wanted to qualify on mediums."
