Coulthard: "I understand if he would want to leave if Red Bull"
Max Verstappen is considered by many as the most talented driver on the grid but the Red Bull driver is yet to win a World Championship to prove it. David Coulthard has admitted he would understand if Max Verstappen wanted to leave the team in order to pursue a title.
Verstappen finished third in the Drivers' Championship in 2019, behind both Mercedes drivers. However, many believe he was driver of the season as he secured three race victories and achieved his first pole position in a weaker car compared to his rivals.
With the Dutchman's contract set to expire at the end of next season could Verstappen leave if Red Bull can't provide a competitive car? David Coulthard isn't ruling out the possibility.
"Max is one of the best drivers, but he has been limited somewhat by the car," Coulthard told De Telegraaf.
"It would be great for Formula 1 if the cars driven by Verstappen, Hamilton and Leclerc are all approximately equal – then we will see an exciting fight.
"But in the last six years, Mercedes has had the best car. I would really like to see Max stay at Red Bull, but I understand if he would want to leave if Red Bull and Honda cannot fight for the title in 2020.
"It's going to be a very important year for them."
