Binotto not expecting regulation changes to close the gap immediately
Mattia Binotto believes the 2021 regulation changes will make the sport more competitive straight away and expects the top teams to still hold a significant advantage over the rest of the field.
At the end of October the regulation changes for the 2021 season were confirmed. Bigger tyres, new rules regarding the involvement of young drivers and a budget cap a few of the biggest features in Liberty Media's biggest first big impact on the sport
With the changes designed to make racing more competitive, the hope is the midfield will be drawn closer to the leading teams. However, Ferrari principal Mattia Binotto is not confident that the changes will have the desired effect.
"These new rules will provide stability to F1 for the next five years, but next year I think the teams with more resources will have a competitive advantage over the others," said Binotto as quoted by La Gazzetta dello Sport.
"In 2021, the scenario will not be very different from what we have today.
"I am quite convinced that we will arrive at a ceiling of performance soon enough. Within three years of the regulations' introduction, the performance gap between the first and last will be reduced.
"In short, the goal that Liberty Media has set itself to level the playing field can be achieved, but it won’t happen immediately."
