Confirmed: Robert Kubica joins Alfa Romeo as a reserve F1 driver
Robert Kubica will be a reserve driver for Alfa Romeo during the 2020 Formula 1 season. The Polish driver was not signed on by Williams after the team experienced another troublesome season but the 35-year-old won't miss out entirely after confirming the news on New Year's Day.
Kubica brings with him a sponsorship deal with Polish petrol company PKN Orlen as they become the team's title sponsor.
In 2006 Kubica became a reserve driver for BMW, the predecessor of Sauber and then Alfa Romeo Racing. With Kubica spending much of his youth career at the same team, he says the team holds a special place in his heart.
"This team holds a special place in my heart and I am pleased to see some faces still here from my years in Hinwil. Time and circumstances are obviously different, but I am convinced I will find the same determination and hunger to succeed. I am looking forward to helping Alfa Romeo Racing make the next step forward," Kubica said.
Last season, Kubica returned from a lengthy break after a rally crash in 2011. In his return season, Kubica scored just one point as Williams' performances weren't able to compete with the rest of the field. He was out-qualified by his rookie teammate George Russell in every event of the year.
Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi will remain as Alfa Romeo's drivers for the 2020 F1 season.
