From 2021, the iconic Aston Martin car brand will be active as a factory team in Formula 1. This was announced on Wednesday by Racing Point, which will no longer be listed as a customer team as of next season.
''Over the past few months this has taken a lot of my time and energy to get this done and there have certainly been some sleepless nights in between, but on the other hand this is the best deal I've ever been involved in. Cars are my passion and Aston Martin has always had a special place in my heart, so it's nice to be able to do that," says Lawrence Stroll in a statement on the website.
Aston Martin to the top
Aston Martin has been featured on the Red Bull Racing car in recent years, as title sponsor of the Max Verstappen team. For a long time there were rumours that Aston Martin was going to make engines for the team, but with the Honda deal that disappeared as an option. Now that Stroll also owns Aston Martin as Executive Chairman, the calculation was quick.
''A brand like Aston Martin should compete at the highest level of motorsport. I think it is one of the most beautiful things in the latest history of F1 and there seems to me no better new name to introduce to the fans. Aston Martin has performed well in several classes, but this is an opportunity to show it at the top of motorsport," concludes Stroll.
